What are Rice Crispy Treats?
Rice crispy treats are a bar dessert made out of rice crispy cereal, melted marshmallows, butter, vanilla, and salt. They make a great addition to a holiday cookie platter and an aesthetic choice for any holiday party menu. The best part is that they take under 30 minutes and they are SO easy!
Recipe Tips
This recipe is easy but it can be sticky and messy. My advice is just roll with it.
Quickness is your friend, and the faster you get the mixture from the stove to the pan, the easier it will be.
How can I keep my rice crispy treats from hardening?
Make sure you don’t overcook the marshmallow when melting them on the stove or in the microwave. You want the marshmallows to be melted just enough to stir them together.
Recipe Variations
The beauty of these bars is that you can add any topping you can think of! Try adding white chocolate chips, sprinkles, peanuts, etc.
Can I make these vegan?
Yes you can! Swap the marshmallows for vegan ones, and the butter for your favorite vegan butter, and the chocolate chips for vegan chocolate chips.
How to Store Christmas Decorated Rice Crispy Treats
Store rice crispy treats at room temperature in an air tight container for up to five days.
Storage tip for sticky bars —> Slice the bars into squares. Cut parchment paper into strips about 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. Place a strip around the bottom and two sides of each bar. This will prevent them from sticking together!

How to Make
Ingredients
Bars
7 cups rice crispies
16 oz. mini marshmallows, plus 4 oz. separated (20 oz. total)
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
Toppings
1/2 cup M&M’s
1/3 cup chocolate chips
Directions
Line a 16x9 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
In a large pot, melt the butter on medium low heat.
Add the marshmallows, stirring constantly so they don’t burn. As soon as they are melted, remove from heat.
Add the salt and vanilla and mix well.
Stir in the rice crispies, mixing well.
Pour the rice cripsies mixture into the pan and spread to cover the pan evenly.
Place a piece of parchment paper over the top and use your hands to press down on the mixture to pack it tightly, making sure the top is even so the treats turn out uniform.
Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave in 20 second intervals, stirring between each until fully melted.
Add the melted chocolate to a small ziplock bag and squeeze it down to one corner. Cut off the tip of the corner and drizzle the chocolate onto the treats. Keep in mind the larger the hole, the larger the thicker the drizzle will look.
Sprinkle m&ms over the top of the chocolate drizzle.
Let the treats cool and set for about 8 hours if possible. Remove from the pan and slice with a knife.
