Homemade Whipped Cream
Learn to make homemade whipped cream in just two simple steps.
There are advantages to making your own whipped cream. For one thing, you can control the amount of sugar you add to it. This is a big plus if you are sensitive to sugar like I am.
Another advantage is that you can add flavors to it - vanilla, chocolate, or any extract you like! The recipe I’m sharing today is a vanilla flavored whipped cream which pairs nicely with almost any dessert. I even like to place a dollop on top of a bowl of fruit for a lighter alternative to dessert.
Give it a try on strawberry shortcake, or sitting atop an ice cream cone! It would even pair nicely atop a quick bread like this Pink Grapefruit Loaf.
Do I need to chill the mixing bowl before I whip the cream?
I recommend chilling the bowl - it will help firm peaks to form. I even chill the whisk!
How long do you have to whip the cream before stiff peaks form?
The time will vary, which makes it a little tricky. I’ve found that when my bowl and whisk are chilled and the cream is cold it can take around 2 minutes and thirty seconds, give or take some.
This is not a process you can step away from - you’ll want to watch it closely the whole time it is whipping to make sure it doesn’t get over whipped.
How do I know if I over whipped the cream and how can I fix it?
When cream is over whipped, it will look thick and chunky - kind of like how parfait looks when jello is mixed in. If your whipped cream looks like this, never fear! You can fix it by gently folding in a little bit of heavy cream that hasn’t been whipped yet.
Can I make this recipe without adding any sugar to it?
Yes! If you prefer a low sugar option, you can whip the cream plain without adding any vanilla or sugar to it. It makes a perfect dollop paired with your fruit of choice!
How to Make Homemade Whipped Cream
Ingredients/Supplies
1 cup Chilled Heavy Whipping Cream
1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
2 tablespoons Powdered Sugar
Special Kitchen Tools
Stand Mixer with stainless steel mixing bowl
Directions
Step One - Add heavy whipping cream, vanilla, and powdered sugar to the mixing bowl.
Step Two - Mix on medium - high (setting six on a kitchen aide stand mixer) for between 2 - 3 minutes or until stiff peaks form.
Watch the cream closely as it is whipping and after 2 minutes stop the mixer to check for stiff peaks. Continue checking every 10-20 seconds so as not to over whip, which can happen fast.
Voila! It’s a beautiful thing. Enjoy!
